Number bonds to 10
You learn the pairs that make 10: number bonds to 10.
How to work it out
- The whole at the top is 10.
- The two parts below must add up to exactly 10.
- Count on from the part you know.
A worked example
A number bond has 10 at the top and 6 in the left part. What is the right part?
- The parts must add up to 10.
- 10 − 6 = 4.
- The right part is 4.
Try it yourself
What number is the missing part?
What number is the missing part?
Watch out
You put the same number in the missing part as in the other part: with 7 you put 7.
Check whether the two parts make 10 together. Seven and seven is 14, so that is not right.
You count on from 7 and say the number you end on instead of the number of steps.
You always end on 10. The number of steps you took is the number for the missing part.
Tips
- The pairs that make 10 are: 0 & 10, 1 & 9, 2 & 8, 3 & 7, 4 & 6, 5 & 5.
Why it works
A number bond shows the whole at the top and the two parts below it. If the whole is 10 and one part is 3, the other part must be 7.
