Calendar and weekdays

You learn to work with weeks and days on the calendar.

How to work it out

  1. On the calendar each week is a row: a week later is one row down.
  2. Looking for the third Thursday? Go two rows down from the first one.
  3. Find the days between two dates by subtracting the dates.
  4. For the weekday, count on: after 7 days it is the same day again.

A worked example

It is Thursday 12 November. What is the date in 2 weeks?

  1. 2 weeks is 14 days.
  2. Add 14 to 12: 12 + 14 = 26.
  3. It is a Thursday again, so 26 November.
More examples

What is the date of the third Thursday in October?

  1. Find the first Thursday.
  2. Then go two rows down: that is the third Thursday.

How many days is it from 12 to 30 October?

  1. Subtract the dates: 30 − 12 = 18.
  2. It is 18 days.

Try it yourself

How many days is it from 1 to 16?

  2. October 2026

How many days is it from October 5 to October 19?

Practise this

Watch out

  • You add 2 weeks as 2 days.

A week is 7 days. So 2 weeks is 14 days more.

  • You count the first day too: from 12 to 30 October would be 19 days.

Subtract the dates: 30 − 12 = 18. You count the days in between, not the start day.

Tips

  • A week later is the same day of the week.

Exceptions

  • Does the date no longer fit in the month? Carry on in the next month: after 31 October comes 1 November.

Why it works

On the calendar each week is a row. So a week later is exactly one row down, in the same column. That is 7 days more.
