Cubic units: 1 m³ is 1,000,000 cm³

You learn to convert cubic units, like m³ to cm³: a cubic metre is 100 cm by 100 cm by 100 cm.

How to work it out

  1. 1 m is 100 cm, so 1 m³ is 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cm³.
  2. To cm³, multiply by 1,000,000.
  3. To m³, divide by 1,000,000.

A worked example

4 m³ = ? cm³

  1. 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³.
  2. Multiply by 1,000,000: 4 × 1,000,000 = 4,000,000.
  3. It is 4,000,000 cm³.
Another example

5,000,000 cm³ = ? m³

  1. You go to the bigger unit, so divide by 1,000,000: 5,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 5.
  2. It is 5 m³.

Try it yourself

This is best practised in the real exercise, where you click, drag or tap yourself.

Practise this

Watch out

  • You multiply by 1,000: 3 m³ becomes 3,000 cm³.

    A cube has a length, a width and a height: 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000.

Tips

  • A cm³ is exactly 1 ml, and 1,000 cm³ is exactly 1 litre.

Why it works

A cube that is 1 m on each side is also 100 cm on each side. 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000 cubes of 1 cm³ fit inside it. A cm³ holds exactly 1 ml.
