Split houses to 10

You learn the pairs that make 10 using a split house.

How to work it out

  1. The roof says 10.
  2. The two rooms below must add up to exactly 10.
  3. Count on from the room you know.
1073

A worked example

A split house has 10 at the top, 6 in the left room. What is in the right room?

  1. The rooms must add to 10.
  2. 10 − 6 = 4.
  3. The right room has 4.

Watch out

  • You put the same number in the empty room as in the other room: with 7 you put 7.

Check whether the two rooms make 10 together. Seven and seven is 14, so that is not right.

  • You count on from 7 and say the number you end on instead of the number of steps.

You always end on 10. The number of steps you took is the number for the empty room.

Tips

  • The pairs that make 10 are: 0 & 10, 1 & 9, 2 & 8, 3 & 7, 4 & 6, 5 & 5.

Why it works

A split house shows two rooms with the total in the roof above them. If the total is 10 and one room has 3, the other must have 7.
