You learn to convert between different ways of saying the same ratio.

How to work it out

A worked example

Write "1 out of 4" as a decimal and as a percentage.

  1. As a fraction: 14.
  2. As a decimal: 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25.
  3. As a percentage: 0.25 × 100 = 25%.
Another example

75% is which fraction?

  1. 75% = 75100.
  2. Simplify: 34.

Watch out

  • You write 14 as 0.4 or as 4%.

Make hundredths first: 14 is 25100. Then you can read it off: 0.25 and 25%.

  • You make hundredths by adding something to the top and bottom: 14 becomes 97100.

Multiply the top and the bottom by the same number. That keeps the fraction the same size.

Tips

  • To change a fraction to a percentage, divide the top by the bottom and multiply by 100.
  • To change a percentage to a fraction, divide by 100.

Why it works

A ratio can be said as "3 out of 5" (ratio), "35" (fraction), "0.6" (decimal) or "60%" (percentage). They all mean the same thing.
