Level crossings
You learn that a train always goes first, and you wait at the level crossing.
How to look in traffic
- Look for flashing red lights and barriers coming down.
- Stop at the line.
- Wait until the lights stop and the barriers go up.
A worked example
A, B and C wait at a level crossing. The barriers are down. A train is coming.
- Look at the barriers and the lights: they say a train is coming.
- The train goes first.
- A and the cyclist both wait for it.
More examples
An ambulance with blue lights comes to the crossing. The barriers are down.
- A train cannot stop for a blue light.
- The train goes first.
- After that the barriers go up, and then the ambulance may go.
The lights are flashing and the barriers are down. A second train may follow.
- Wait until the lights stop and the barriers are fully up.
- Look both ways, then go.
Try it yourself
This is best practised in the real exercise, where you click, drag or tap yourself.
Practise thisWatch out
You try to get across before the barrier comes down.
Never. Stop at the line when the lights start.
Tips
- Never drive onto the crossing unless the road beyond is clear.
- If your car stops on the crossing, get everyone out and away.
Why it works
A train cannot stop quickly or swerve. When the red lights flash and the barriers come down, you stop. You wait until the lights stop and the barriers go back up.
