What the sign says

You learn to read what an order sign says, and who it is for.

How to look in traffic

  1. Look at the picture on the sign.
  2. A red circle says what you must not do.
  3. A blue circle says what you must do.

A worked example

A red circle with a bicycle is at the end of a street. Who may go in?

  1. The sign says no cycling.
  2. A car and a pedestrian may go in.
  3. The cyclist may not.
More examples

A red circle with a white bar is at the end of a street. Who may go in?

  1. No entry for vehicles.
  2. That includes bikes.
  3. Only a pedestrian may walk in.

A blue circle with a bicycle marks a route. Who must use it?

  1. Blue says: you must.
  2. This route is for bikes only.

Try it yourself

This is best practised in the real exercise, where you click, drag or tap yourself.

Practise this

Watch out

  • You think that a red circle means everyone is forbidden.

Read the picture. It says who: only that kind of road user.

Tips

  • A red ring means do not. A blue circle means do.
  • A bar across a red circle means no entry.

Why it works

A red circle tells you what you must not do. A blue circle tells you what you must do. The picture on the sign says who it is for: a bicycle, a car, or a person.
