g and h — reach inwards
You learn the g and the h: your index fingers reach one key inwards and come straight back.
How to find the key
- Stretch your left index finger from the f one key to the right: that is the g.
- Stretch your right index finger from the j one key to the left: that is the h.
- Then go straight back to the bump.

A worked example
ggg hhh
- Rest your index fingers on the bumps.
- Stretch your left index finger one key to the right, onto the g.
- Tap it, and go back to the f.
- Press the space bar.
- Stretch your right index finger one key to the left, onto the h.
- Tap it, and go back to the j.
More examples
gh hg gh
- Tap the g with your left index finger.
- Go back to the f.
- Tap the h with your right index finger.
- Go back to the j.
dad had
- Tap the d, the a and the d.
- Press the space bar.
- Reach for the h with your right index finger, then tap the a and the d.
Watch out
You leave your index finger on the g after you tap it.
Go back to the bump every time. Then your other fingers stay where they should.
Tips
- The g belongs to your left hand and the h to your right.
- Count the key you reach for: it is only one key.
Why it works
The index fingers do two columns each. The g and the h are the first keys that ask a finger to leave its place. The rule is the same for every key from now on: reach, tap, and return to the bump.
