Traffic lights
You learn to follow the traffic lights, and to take care when you turn right.
How to know who goes first
- Look at your own light.
- Red means stop, green means go if the way is clear.
- Turning right? Wait for oncoming traffic.
A worked example
A has a green light and B has a red light.
- Look at the lights.
- A has green, B has red.
- First A, then B.
More examples
A turns right on green. B has green too, coming the other way.
- Both have green, so the normal rules apply.
- A turns right across B and waits.
- First B, then A.
A cyclist has a red light. A car has green.
- The cyclist has red and must stop.
- The car has green and goes.
- Tap the cyclist.
Watch out
You go on green without looking.
Check that the way is clear before you go.
Tips
- Amber means stop, unless it is unsafe to do so.
- Do not go until the road ahead is clear.
Why it works
Traffic lights tell you when to go and when to stop. Red means stop, green means go if the way is clear. When you turn right on a green light, you still give way to oncoming traffic.
